The Jaguar I-Pace named 2019 ‘Car of the Year’

Geneva, 4 March 2019 – The results from 60 automotive journalists from 23 European countries are in: the 2019 ‘Car of the Year’ award goes to the Jaguar I-Pace. Never in the history of this renowned car award has the result been so close. For the first time, there was a tie for first place based on points awarded, leaving the result up to a count of the jury votes. The votes were tallied this afternoon at the Geneva Motor Show in front of a live audience of international press representatives.

The electric SUV Jaguar I-Pace was able to win over the jury in a series of intense test drives, earning itself 250 points (18 jury votes) for a victory against six rivals in the finale for the prestigious car award. The Alpine A110 came second, also with 250 points (16 jury votes). Third to seventh place went to the Kia Ceed (247 points), the Ford Focus (235 points), the Citroën C5 Aircross (210 points), the Peugeot 508 (192 points) and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class (116 points).

In deciding the victor, jurors looked not only for innovation and safety, but also design and value for money.

The international ‘Car of the Year’ award is considered to be the most coveted automotive award in the world. The jury currently consists of 60 journalists from 23 European countries. As a founding member of the initiative, STERN magazine has been presenting the award since 1964. ‘Car of the Year’ began as a joint project between magazines from seven different countries: Germany (STERN), France (L'Automobile), the United Kingdom (Autocar), the Netherlands (Autovisie), Italy (Auto), Sweden (Vi Bilägare) and Spain (Autopista).
